HISTORY OF BEACON LOFTS
Martin and John Bekins founded the Bekins Company in Omaha, Nebraska in 1891. By the early 1890s, growing
economic prosperity resulted in a higher demand for
warehouse storage. In 1895, Martin expanded the
business to Los Angeles and became one of the first
companies on the West Coast to use covered moving
vans and specialize in moving household goods.
Bekins built the industry's first reinforced steel and concrete Warehouses in Los Angeles. During the first half of the 20th century, Bekins setup a number of large fireproof warehouses in Southern California including locations in downtown Los Angeles, Glendale, Pasadena and South Los Angeles.
By the 1920s, Bekins had warehouse locations throughout California and extended its motor van operations into the northwestern and eastern regions of the United States by the 1930s.
