Montrose Area

Montrose is an inner-loop community whose subdivision boundary lines are as undefined as the area itself. This inner-loop neighborhood is just west of downtown, situated on both sides of Westheimer until you get to Grant Street one block before Montrose Boulevard. It’s located south of Westheimer to Richmond and stops at Mulberry to the West. The subdivision is not a square and there are areas in Montrose which are in other subdivisions such as Hyde Park, which is located to the west. Its rich history goes back to 1911, when J. W. Link envisioned Montrose as a planned community and streetcar suburb of Houston and was modeled after the St. Louis private places. The ties between St. Louis and Houston were strong because of their shared status as railroad centers and because of the personal connections among leaders in the railroad business. Montrose was much larger and less exclusive than Courtlandt Place; nevertheless, it was considered a choice residential neighborhood by virtue of its esplanade boulevard and building restrictions. Montrose is a legendary neighborhood where intellectuals, artists, and business professionals live in harmony. The neighborhood is considered one of the most demographically diverse areas of Houston with renovated mansions, bungalows with wide porches, and cottages located along tree-lined boulevards. Montrose is one of the more pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods in Houston, and the area has a strong identity built up over its long history. Westheimer Road is still considered the “Main Street” of the Montrose area and where antique stores, restaurants, shops, and bars offer something for everyone. Just walking down Westheimer can be an experience in itself where a combination of sidewalk vendors, artists, and street people pass every day. Residents of Montrose would not live anywhere else as all home are within walking distance of the action. Montrose is also billed as a place for those who want more out of life.
